In the 1980s, after years of believing it to be extinct, biologist Miguel Canals rediscovered the crested toad in ponds in the Guánica Dry Forest.

For years, it was thought to be extinct; its trail had vanished from where it used to be found. But the Puerto Rican concho toad’s struggle for survival has outlasted the challenges, and now, unexpectedly, its distinctive pointed snout and crests over its eyes have taken the world by storm.
