The beginning of the fall of the coffee industry dates back to the 1990s when around 280,000 quintals of local coffee were harvested and around 16,088 quintals were imported, according to the Índice de Producción Agrícola of the Instituto de Estadística de Puerto Rico. (Josian Bruno/GFR MEDIA)

The devastation caused by Hurricane María in 2017 still takes its toll on local coffee production since more than six years after the cyclone, production volumes continue significantly below the more than 65,000 quintals produced annually before the hurricane, said Ramón González Beiró, Agriculture Secretary.
