The Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority plans a major project with new elevated roads and changes to Las Américas Highway and surrounding roads to ease traffic in the area.

The traffic problems caused by Hurricane María in the area led to numerous complaints and criticism - even protests - mainly due to the restrictions imposed on the entry and exit of the University Gardens development next to the busy road. (Nahira Montcourt)

Since Hurricane María hit Puerto Rico in 2017, driving on Jesús T. Piñero (PR-17) in San Juan has changed forever. More than six years later, traffic lights are still out at some intersections, and safety barriers preventing crossings show a new flow that will be permanent.
