The relevance of Puerto Rico’s territorial waters for the protection of the Caribbean manatee and the humpback whale was recently recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which designated two marine basins around the archipelago as “Important Marine Mammal Areas” (IMMA), an effort promoted by a group of scientists led by biologist and executive director of the Caribbean Manatee Conservation Center, Antonio Mignucci.
