The “News Release” from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense was dated February 20, 1967. In precise droll language it stated that “The Department of Defense today announced the following casualties in connection with the conflict in Vietnam.” The release proceeds to list 72 soldiers, 10 marines and one airman killed as a result of hostile action the previous day.
